Recently two sections of off road cycleway have been opened to the public in Midlothian
The first section of cycleway links between High Street, Bonnyrigg and the existing Penicuik to Dalkeith Cycleway. The path is 3 metres wide asphalt surface, drainage, street lighting and links to Raes Gardens, Eldindean Road, Lothian Street, Scollon Avenue and Wishart Avenue, Bonnyrigg. Additionally the cycleway will eventually link into the new Bonnyrigg Health Centre at High Street, Bonnyrigg.
The second section lies between Station Road, Loanhead and Cemetery Road, Loanhead and was recently opened by Provest Sam Cambell. This the second phase of a cycleway which is proposed to extend from Loanhead to Roslin. Currently discussions are ongoing with Roslin Institute to establish the final missing link. At present the cycleway lies between Station Road, Loanhead and Bilston Glen Viaduct and is approximately 1km in length.
Recent cycling facilities include approximately 10 kilometres of on-road cycle lanes painted on the A701 between Penicuik and Straiton and on the A7 between Sheriffhall Roundabout and Danderhall.
The Penicuik to Sheriffhall Roundabout cycleway is approximately 8 miles long and is mostly off road. The cycleway passes through Roslin Glen, Rosewell, Bonnyrigg, Eskbank, Dalkeith and eventually terminates at Sheriffhall Roundabout.
