The Penicuik to Dalkeith Walkway, tucked away in the peaceful countryside of Midlothian, follows the route of an abandoned railway line. The Walkway is managed by Midlothian Ranger Service and is suitable for a wide range of users, including walkers, wheelchair-users, families with pushchairs, cyclists and horse riders.
The Walkway starts at Penicuik at the site of the Valleyfield Mill and follows the River North Esk before passing through open countryside with views to the Moorfoot Hills. It continues on to Dalkeith, close to the Edinburgh City Bypass where, after a short break, it connects to the River Esk at Musselburgh.
The walkway passes close to urban areas, and forms a vital corridor for wildlife. Sections of the walkway are home to many animals, including Roe Deer, Fox and Great Spotted and Green Woodpecker, and plants such as Giant Horsetail and Hart’s Tongue Fern.
