As well as running its own projects and activities, Community Learning & Development works with a wide range of local organisations and helps to support local initiatives. One of the local initiatives which we've supported is the setting up of a community radio station in Midlothian, based at Newbattle Community Learning Centre in Newtongrange. Black Diamond FM has a licence for an initial period of five years to enable it to broadcast locally on 107.8 FM - transmitting to areas including Dalkeith, Mayfield, Bonnyrigg, Gorebridge and Newtongrange. The station can now also be heard online. Black Diamond FM is a community-owned and community-led local radio project, which is not for individual financial or commercial gain, but is dedicated to serving the community as a communication tool. Their aim is to be community radio for the community, by the community, as shown by their key characteristics as submitted to the UK communications regulator Ofcom: The station will be rooted in the local community and accessible to all local people, providing unique and appropriate Midlothian-focussed educational and entertainment programming. Quality training opportunities will be provided for local people to make and broadcast their own programme productions, which will meet the needs of local groups within the community – using community radio as a means of empowerment and personal development. It’s about radio of the community, for the community, by the community as well as education, entertainment, and empowerment; a community communication platform accessible to all groups and individuals which have the democratic benefit of the community at heart. In the longer term the aim is for Black Diamond FM to help give Midlothian back its confidence and cultural identity by improving its communications. Black Diamond FM welcomes ideas, opinions, support and active participation from all members of the community in Midlothian.
