Children & Young People

Midlothian Council is committed to making sure Midlothian’s children and young people have the best possible start in life and are given opportunities to realise their full potential. We will do this through supporting every child and/or young person  to be safe, healthy, achieving, active, respected and responsible, and included, in accord with the ‘Getting it Right for Every Child’ agenda.

Children and Families contribute towards the above by making sure that where additional services are required children, young people, and their families receive the appropriate advice, and /or level of support required. We do this through:

  • Giving information on other services
  • Providing where appropriate, assessment for you, your child, or for others (such as the Children's Hearing System etc)
  • When appropriate, provide support and intervention to children and families with assessed needs

Children and Families fieldwork services are located in two settings. The Integration Teams provide earlier intervention to families and are located alongside schools and managed by the Education and Communities Division. The main social work provision is provided by the Practice Team. The Resources Section manages Family Placement, Throughcare and Aftercare, and Day and Residential services. At Social Work headquarters, The Planning Team supports the development of Social Work Children and Families Services within a planning partnership, which includes all services working with children.

The following information provides a summary of the services and support we can provide:

  • addressing situations where a child may be in need or at risk of abuse
  • providing services to children who have a disability or affected by the disability of another person
  • providing alternative care to children who can't be looked after by their families. This includes adoption, fostering and residential care
  • providing services to young people previously looked after by Midlothian Social Work
  • addressing with youth offending and antisocial behaviour
  • providing information and advice on debt and welfare benefits
  • providing support to carers
  • providing support for people affected by drug or alcohol misuse
  • working with partner agencies to develop and implement Midlothian’s Children’s Services Strategy and Plan.

Resources Section

The Resource Section delivers services to children and young people who are unable to live within their own families by way of the Family Placement Team who provide Fostering and Adoption. The section is also responsible for providing Residential and Day services to children and young people where appropriate, as well as offering a Throughcare and Aftercare service to young people leaving the care system.

A wider range of Midlothian's children's services can be accessed via the Children's Services Database.
