Bus Service Updates

This site will give regular updates as and when changes to bus services are notified to the Council by local operators, always subject to the Traffic Commissioner's approval. These will be listed in introduction date order with the most recent at the top and the furthest back in time at the bottom. Introduction dates will be shown in CAPITALS.

Details of changes will be removed from the list no sooner than 12 months after the introduction date.

"Minor timetable changes" means that there is no change in the number of journeys being operated, but some journeys may vary by a few minutes either way [earlier or later].

SUNDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2009

It is anticipated that Princes Street will be re-opened to buses from this date after completion of tram-track laying. Most bus services will revert to exactly the same routes they used prior to the closure. However, a few of the routes cannot do this. Physical changes to the road layout after track-laying means that some manoeuvres are no longer possible and in these circumstances alternative routes have been sought. These changes on the 29, X29 and 67 reflect such alternative routes.

29 November is the expected date at the moment [6 Nov]. This entry will be updated if, nearer the time, there needs to be a revision to this date.

Lothian Buses - Services 29, X29 - Gorebridge or Mayfield - Newtongrange - TESCO [29] - Dobbies - Gilmerton - Cameron Toll - Bridges - Princes St - Frederick St - Stockbridge - Comely Bank - Western General Hospital - Crewe Toll - Drylaw - Silverknowes

Service used to run from Princes Street to Frederick Street via Hanover St and George St. After the roadworks the route will be direct from Princes St into Frederick St.

Lothian Buses - Services 67 - Bush - Straiton P+R - Burdiehouse - King's Buildings - Mayfield Rd - Potterrow - Bristo Gyratory - George IV Bridge - Waverley Bridge - St Andrew Square

Service used to run from George IV Bridge via The Mound, Hanover Street and George Street to St Andrew Square. After the roadworks the route will be via Market Street and Waverley Bridge.

Munro's of Jedburgh - Services 51/52 - Edinburgh Waterloo Place - Cameron Toll - Dalkeith - Whitehill - Edgehead - Pathhead - Blackshiels [for Fala] - Gilston Road End - Soutra - Lauder - Earlston - Newtown St Boswells - Jedburgh [51] or Kelso [52]

Scottish Borders Council [SBC] gives financial support to this service. Midlothian Council makes a minor financial contribution to the 51/52 service to guarantee the route via Edgehead/Whitehill.

SBC needs to find £150k of savings in the current financial year and has undertaken a review of its supported bus services to identify lesser used journeys that could be withdrawn with the least impact in order to achieve those savings.

SBC has identified journeys on services that run entirely within its own area, but also some journeys on services that cross into neighbouring authorities, including the 51/52. It is clear that the cuts are across the board and do not solely affect cross-boundary services.

Midlothian Council does not have the budget availability to buy back any of these journeys - but see entry for new service 53 below from Monday 2 November 2009.

The following journeys on 51/52 have been identified as being amongst the least used of SBC-supported journeys and are being withdrawn after Sunday 1 November 2009.

0555 Jedburgh to Edinburgh [Saturday]

0800 Edinburgh to Jedburgh [Saturday]

1810 Jedburgh to Edinburgh [Mon-Sat]

1920 Edinburgh to Jedburgh {Mon-Sat]

2005 Jedburgh to Edinburgh [Daily]

2210 Edinburgh to Jedburgh [Daily]

There is one timetable change - the 0755 Jedburgh to Edinburgh service will run 5 minutes earlier on Mondays to Fridays.

Munro's of Jedburgh - NEW SERVICE - Service 53 - Dalkeith - Whitehill - Edgehead - Pathhead - Blackshiels [for Fala] - Gilston Road End - Soutra - Lauder

Two new journeys per day Mondays to Saturdays

0630 Lauder to Dalkeith

This replaces the former 51 from Blackshiels at 0647 to Dalkeith arrive 0706. It will replace in this section the withdrawn 0555 Jedburgh to Edinburgh on Saturdays.

1940 Dalkeith to Lauder

This replaces the withdrawn 51 from Edinburgh at 1920 over the Dalkeith to Lauder section.

The 53 service journeys will be operated by a vehicle that would otherwise operate empty from the depot in Jedburgh to/from the start/finish of the 308/328/408 contract at Dalkeith. Midlothian Council is not paying any more for these 53 journeys over and above the contract cost for the 308 group. However, the future of the 53 service is linked with that of the 308 contract. If there is a substantial change to the 308 [times of operation, switch of operator etc] then the 53 will be affected.
