Interior photograph of Cousland SmiddyMidlothian Council has taken part in Doors Open Day since 1996. The Doors Open Day event is intended to stimulate interest and a greater understanding of the fascinating architectural heritage, culture and enterprise within our local area. It is hoped that by bringing citizens closer to their cultural heritage it will help them get to know and understand each other better. Along with Scottish Archaeology Month, Doors Open Day is part of European Heritage Days.

On Doors Open Day 2009 visitors to Midlothian were able to visit a wide variety of venues. Whether visitors wanted to find out more about local history and architecture, learn more about the industrial heritage of Midlothian, see examples of sustainable design or just bring the family along to a family fun day, the programme had something for everyone.
