What We Do Community Learning & Development (formerly known as Community Education) is an integral part of Education & Children's Services and is the main Midlothian Council provider of community learning activities.
We offer a comprehensive range of learning opportunities and community-building activities. The main categories are listed below.
Where a payment is required for our courses or activities a range of concessions is available.
We try to ensure that all our courses and activities are available to everyone, ensuring access for people with disabilities where possible.
Mainstream Programme
We offer a mainstream learning programme of day and evening classes. The Adult Learning Programme is made up of courses in anything from PC Passport for those who want to increase their computing skills to courses such as Dressmaking and Photography for fun. Participants normally pay for these courses, though concessions are available.
Community Based Adult Learning This can be projects or small courses that are based in one of the communities within Midlothian. They will often be free and the content will have been identified by people living in that community. They might be anything from a short course in Confidence Building to Crèche Worker training.
Everyday English and Maths These courses are for people who want to improve their writing, reading or number skills. The learning takes place in small, friendly groups and people learn at their own pace. Courses are free and run daytime and evening across Midlothian.
Lip-Reading We offer courses in lip-reading for people who have a hearing loss. The learning takes place in groups which are free, friendly and informal.
Family Learning We offer short courses for parents. We recognise the part that parents, carers and communities play in the learning and development of our children. The courses cover areas from 'first steps' like Learning about Learning and Family Matters to qualifications like SQA Units.
Partnership Work Community Learning & Development works in partnership with many organisations including MYPAS, Jewel & Esk Valley College and Midlothian Voluntary Action.
Youth and Children's Work We carry out Youth and Children's Work, mainly through clubs, drop-in facilities, youth cafes and outreach programmes.
Community Work We encourage active participation in a variety of community projects and provide management of community facilities.
Grant Awards to Voluntary Organisations We assist the Council in the provision of grants to voluntary groups and organisations.
