10 top tips
Below are some helpful hints and tips that will help both you and the collection crews avoid some of the most common problems found using the kerbside recycling scheme:
- Always present your containers for collection by 7:00am
- Use your red recycling box for glass bottles and jars
- Use your blue recycling bin for paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans, cartons, plastic pots, tubs punnets and trays, aerosol cans and foil
- Place all items directly into your blue bin - do not use plastic carrier bags
- Do not use a bin liner to line your blue bin. This is made of polythene and cannot be recycled
- You can use your old blue box to present glass bottles / jars for collection
- You can request extra boxes or an extra blue bin by calling the recycling helpline. Alternatively boxes can be collected from either the Penicuik Recycling Centre (on Bellmans Road) or the Newtongrange Recycling Centre (Stobhill Road)
- We are not able to accept polystyrene, polythene such as bread bags or cling film, or hard plastic items such as toys, coathangers or drainpipes
- Flatten large cardboard boxes to save space
- Elderly or disabled residents who have difficulty in presenting recycling boxes for collection should call the recycling helpline to arrange an assisted collection, which means the crew will collect and return the bix / box to your property
