Pet Shops
Pet Shop Licence
If you wish to sell animals as pets you will require a Pet Shop Licence. This applies whether you have a shop or are selling from your own home. The licence is to ensure animal welfare standards and the facilities provided are suitable. It is illegal to sell pets from a market stall.
Are there any exemptions?
If you are selling animals that are offspring of your own pets, are pedigree animals bred by you, or you hold a Dog Breeders Licence, you do not require a Pet Shop Licence.
How do I apply?
Applicants must complete the application form and submit it to the Environmental Health along with the correct fee.
How much does it cost?
The charge for this service is currently £96.
What happens when I apply?
Your premises will be inspected by an Environmental Health Officer who may be accompanied by our Veterinary Officer prior to issuing your licence. They will check that the premises and your animal welfare arrangements are suitable.
How long do licences last for?
Pet Shop licences last for 12 months (from 1 January to 31 December) and must be renewed annually.
