Dog fouling
It is against the law for anyone who is responsible for a dog to fail to clean up after the dog has fouled.
People who don't clean up after their dog face a fixed penalty fine of £40. The fine increases to £60 if it is not paid within 28 days. The maximum fine is £500 if convicted of an offence.
Reporting a dog fouling problem
If people are letting their dogs foul in your area you can contact us for advice and assistance, or you can report it online:
If you contact us about a dog fouling issue, you will need to tell us the following things to help us investigate and target warden patrols:
- where and when fouling is happening
- the dog owner's name and address, if you know it
- what the dog looks like, including breed and colour
- your own contact details
Promoting responsible dog ownership
We are keen to promote responsible dog ownership and we do this by:
- telling dog owners about their responsibilities
- taking enforcement action against offenders
- giving talks to primary school children
- giving out free dog bags at council offices, leisure centres and libraries
- having dog bins at various locations throughout Midlothian
- putting up "No Fouling" signs
