Store your bins and boxes securely

Residents are being asked to be vigilant due to an increase in bin thefts and bin fires in Mayfield over the past few weeks. Wheelie bins and recycling boxes have been stolen from gardens and set alight in a spate of anti-social behaviour.

Apart from the inconvenience to homeowners in having to arrange a replacement bin, rubbish fires are also a drain on Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, tying up resources which could be needed for a life-saving emergency response.

People often underestimate the damage that can be caused by a fire involving wheelie bins or refuse. Rubbish burns at an alarming rate and the fire can spread extremely rapidly, putting lives at risk, and releasing toxic fumes.

There are a number of simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk of theft or loss of your wheeled bins / recycling boxes:

  • Store your bins / boxes within a secure areas of your garden, out of sight of back alleyways and footpaths if possible. Ideally they should be stored behind locked gates
  • Only present your bin / boxes for collection on the morning of your dedicated collection day, not the night before
  • Securely store your bin / boxes again as soon as possible after they have been emptied

Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
