Local Development Plan

The Development Plan Scheme for Midlothian No. 3 sets out the current programme for preparing, reviewing and consulting on the Strategic Development Plan (SDP) for Edinburgh and South East Scotland (prepared by SESplan) and the local development plan for Midlothian. This explains the relationship between the two plans and the requirement for the preparation of the Midlothian Local Development Plan (MLDP) to await key milestones in the preparation of the SDP.

The SESplan Main Issues Report (MIR) has been the subject of consultation during 2010. The views received will influence the preparation of the Proposed SDP, which will set the planning framework for the proposed MLDP.  The consultation on the SESplan MIR allows work to start on the MLDP, which will be prepared by Midlothian Council.  It will

• set out policies in more detail than the Strategic Development Plan; and
• identify sites for development, in line with the Strategic Development Plan.

The Next Stage

Midlothian Council will prepare a Main Issues Report for the MLDP during 2011 and consult on it early in 2012. This will set out a preferred development strategy for Midlothian for the period up to 2032.  A Proposed Midlothian Local Development Plan will be published later in 2012.
