Penicuik extra care housing
Recognising that people generally wish to remain at home for as long as possible and in line with the need to shift the balance of care from nursing care to care at home, Midlothian Council are investing in 32 new extra-care housing flats at Eastfield Drive, Penicuik, due to complete in summer 2013.
This facility will provide an intensive 24/7 care and support service to older people, in their own tenancy, who previously would have been admitted to Pentland House or other residential homes. It will have the capacity to meet the needs of a range of older people with varying health and care needs, including those who may develop severe dementia, and intensive end-of-life care needs during their tenancy.
Work is planned to start on site around March 2012 with a view to having the extra care housing ready for people to move in summer 2013.
Proposal for Eastfield Drive site
The development includes a two-storey block providing 28 one-bedroom flats and 4 two-bedroom flats, providing housing for a maximum of 64 people and will provide for couples as well as individuals. The block will include a communal "hub" with facilities such as dining, social, recreational and laundry facilities as well as a staff base. Care staff based at the development will be able to provide support to people in the wider Penicuik community.
In addition, the site include a peripheral housing development of 22 units offering mixed general needs housing for rent and a new four-bed residential provision for younger teenagers who have to be taken into care.
Midlothian Council Planning Committee approved both planning applications for the site on 8th November 2011. More detailed information is available at:
