How the council works

The council

Midlothian Council is made up of 18 locally-elected councillors covering 6 wards (areas) within Midlothian.

Our councillors make decisions on how to improve local services on behalf of local people. The way in which councillors make decisions is informed by the ideas of the political parties they represent, and by consultation with local residents.

At the local council elections in 2012, the Scottish National Party formed a ruling coalition with the support of independent member Peter de Vink. The Council elected Councillor Bob Constable as Leader.

Committees

Councillors meet regularly as a full council:

Our councillors are also on various committees which all have different functions.

Management

The day-to-day management of the council and its services is carried out by Council staff overseen by our Chief Executive, Kenneth Lawrie, and management team.
