Who can claim Council Tax discounts
Single person
If you are the only adult living in a property you can get a 25% discount.
If any of the people listed below live in your home, then they do not count as adults when calculating your bill.
- Full-time students, student nurses, apprentices and Youth Training trainees
- People who are severely mentally impaired
- People caring for someone with a disability who is not a spouse, a partner, or child under 18
This is not a complete list.
You must tell us of any change of circumstances that affects your entitlement. If you don't you may be required to pay a penalty.
You can claim a single person discount by printing off the following form, filling it in and returning it to us.
Second homes
Domestic properties that are no-one's sole or main residence and are furnished are defined as second homes. Second home properties will receive a 10% discount.
Long term empty properties
Domestic properties that are no-one's sole or main residence and are empty of furniture receive:
- Six months exemption from Council Tax.
- After six months exemption, the property will receive a 50% discount for six months.
- After six months 50% discount, the property will receive a 10% discount.
