Paying your Council Tax

What happens if I don't pay?

You need to pay your Council Tax instalments by the due date stated on your bill.   If you miss one full instalment you will fall into arrears and we will send you a reminder notice  asking for payment within 7 days.

If the payment is not received within the 7 days, you will lose your right to pay by instalments and the outstanding balance will become due in full.

Contact us if you're having problems paying

It is very important, if you have a problem paying, you contact us to prevent further action being taken:

What happens if I don't pay?

If you don't make full payment or contact us, we will have to take further action, which will mean court costs of 10% of your balance being added to your bill.

This may lead to:

  • the Sheriff Officers, Walker Love, being involved in the recovery process and further charges being added
  • you being asked for details of your employment and bank accounts
  • your earnings being arrested
  • your bank account being arrested
  • direct deductions being made from your Income Support

In certain circumstances we may apply to the Court for an individual decree to recover the debt.

This could mean:

  • interest and expenses being added to your outstanding balance
  • inhibiting the sale of your property
  • making your debt public which could block your access to credit such as hire purchase, credit cards, store cards and mortgages
