School placement

Midlothian is divided into catchment areas. Every house has a catchment area associated with it, where you would be given priority admission.

Each catchment area has: 

• a non-denominational primary school
• a non-denominational secondary school
• a Roman Catholic primary school
• a Roman Catholic secondary school

Please note that your nearest school may not be your catchment school. 

When to enrol

Entry to the new Primary 1

Parents of children due to start primary 1 in August 2012 must register their child at their catchment school by 23 December 2011.  If you fail to register by this date, your child can not be guaranteed a place at their catchment school.

Entry to the new Secondary 1

All parents of primary 7 pupils who are in attendance at a Midlothian  primary school will automatically receive confirmation of the catchment school serving your home by the end of November.  No further action is normally required if you want your child to attend the catchment secondary school.

Enrolling in a nursery school/class

Contact the school after your child's second birthday to place them on the waiting list.  There are no catchment areas for nursery schools/classes.

How to enrol

Parents should enrol the child at their catchment school (non-denominational or denominational (RC)). 

Please take your child's birth certificate and proof of address, such as a Council Tax Notice, gas, electricity, or telephone (landline, not mobile) bill with your name and current address printed on it.

Applying for a non-catchment school

You can also apply for your child to be placed in a school outwith your catchment area (make a placing request). However, although we will try to accommodate your wishes, it may not always be possible to send your child to a school other than their catchment one.

For 2012, placing requests at non-catchment schools for Primary 1 and Secondary 1 must be made in writing by 31 January 2012.
