The 32 volume Encyclopedia Britannica needs no introduction and Britannica Online is even more comprehensive, containing over 118,000 articles; 2,000 video clips; 22,000 and 24.000 biographies, all available at the click of a mouse at any public access library PC. The strength of Britannica Online is not only that it offers more than the printed version, it is also kept up bang up to date. For library members there is the added bonus of being able to access Britannica Online from any Internet PC via the links below. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and enter your borrower card number when prompted. Britannica Junior (For ages 5-11) Britannica Student (For ages 12-18) Britannica Library Edition (For ages 18+) NewsUK is an amazingly comprehensive newspaper database covering 18 national and 38 regional tiles in addition to 3 weekly magazines. It also includes links to the on-line editions of hundreds of local papers. It is an extremely flexible resource and can be searched in a variety of different ways including: across the entire database; all articles by a particular writer or all the articles in a particular newspaper on a given day. Like Britannica Online, library members can access NewsUK from any Internet PC via the link below. NewsUK NewsUK is produced by ProQuest who also produce KnowUK another impressive service which has been available in Midlothian Libraries for the last two years. KnowUK is an online reference library which includes over 100 of the latest editions of the most popular reference books. Again, it can be accessed both in your local library and by library members from any Internet PC via the link below. KnowUK SCRAN, a vast online collection of digital images and other material of historical and cultural significance, is now also available at any PC in your local library. Originally SCRAN concentrated on gathering purely Scottish material but it has since widened the net considerably. As it says on the web site: " So, if you need a picture of a tiger, Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery, a Degas, a Dali, images of war or whaling, standing stones, a pint of beer, an integrated circuit, or line drawings of an acorn or an adrenal gland - to name a few - try SCRAN first." To make this huge collection easier to navigate many of the images have been organised into themes and an online guide is available to assist you to find what you are looking for.
