Counterfeit clothing off to good causes in Africa and Asia

Published on

Our Trading Standards team have joined with counterparts in neighbouring local councils to send a large batch of counterfeit clothing to less developed countries in Africa and Asia.

The goods had been seized by our Trading Standards officers but now that Court proceedings have finished, the counterfeit items will be de-labelled and will soon be making their way to Africa and Asia as part of an aid convoy.

There were 85 items in total from Midlothian, and the National Police Aid Convoy also included seized goods from West Lothian, Edinburgh and Fife. The clothes had been seized by Trading Standards officers in each of the local authorities for a range of reasons - a large proportion for being counterfeit.

All the clothes were checked beforehand to ensure they were of suitably high quality to be useful to people in less developed countries. Most of the Midlothian contribution was used as evidence in a prosecution and was eventually forfeited by the court.

If you suspect you have purchased counterfeit goods and wish to report it, please contact our Trading Standards team on 0131 271 3549 or by email to tradingstandards@midlothian.gov.uk
