Councillor Jim Bryant as been appointed as the new Carers’ Champion for Midlothian. The appointment was agreed at a meeting of the full council this afternoon.

This is the first time Midlothian has appointed a Carers' Champion. The appointment was one of a number of actions arising out of the Midlothian Carers Strategy and Action Plan agreed by the council earlier this year.

As Midlothian's new Carers' Champion, Councillor Bryant will act as a top-level advocate for thousands of family carers throughout Midlothian. He will also work closely with senior Council officers to support local carers and ensure they have a strong and effective voice at the highest levels of the council. Cllr Bryant will also oversee the implementation of the Midlothian Carers Strategy.

Speaking after his appointment, Cllr Jim Bryant said: "I am delighted to be appointed as Midlothian's new Carers' Champion. My appointment is a reflection of this council's determination to support and value local carers in the vital work that they do. I was involved with supporting carers through my previous work with the Citizens Advice Bureau and I know that carers play an absolutely crucial role in our community - supporting older people and people with disabilities to live safely and as independently as possible. I look forward to meeting with local carers' groups to discuss how best I can support them in my new role."
