Summary
We were reviewing the Midlothian Core Paths Plan (PDF) first published in 2009, in line with the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, so that it continues to be "sufficient for the purpose of giving the public reasonable access throughout their area”.
We wanted to gather final comments on paths as part of the review of the Midlothian Core Paths Plan before progressing to a formal consultation on the Draft Plan in 2021.
The first stage consultation of this review lasted 4 weeks from 11 February to 6 March 2019 and comments returned have, where appropriate, been incorporated into this latest version of the proposed Plan.
What is a Core Path?
The Plan is made of Core Paths. These are routes free from obstruction that provide some clear use to the public, such as for recreation, commuting, and accessing facilities.
A Core Path can be anything from a tarmac route to a grassy field margin. The designated path should be a clear route that provides good public amenity for recreation and access to facilities. Generally it will not be an urban roadside footway unless designated as a cycle path.

Use the map to find and select the route you want to comment on and copy or take a note of its code e.g. AP001 then:
The closing date for comments was Monday 14 December 2020.
What happens next?
Proposed Core Paths from this consultation will be added to the routes in the current Core Paths Plan, adopted in 2009, to form the Draft Core Paths Plan.
The consultation on the Draft Plan will take place over a statutory 12-week period. The consultation will give the public and landowners the opportunity to lodge formal objections to the Draft Plan. Objections will only be accepted about proposed Core Paths and not paths that form part of the Plan adopted in 2009.
If all objections are resolved then the council will seek approval for the Draft Plan.
If objections cannot be resolved, an inquiry may be held to decide on whether a given objection is upheld, so the council may take forward its plan for approval.
