Commonwealth Games heroes launch search for this year’s local sports stars

Midlothian’s Commonwealth Games record-breaking bowlers, Ronnie Duncan and Stacey McDougall, are encouraging locals to get nominating for the Midlothian Sports Awards 2018.

The search is underway

The pair, who helped Team Scotland complete their most successful overseas Commonwealth Games as part of the lawn bowls team earlier this year, are now supporting this year’s search for the county’s sporting stars.

Stacey, who picked up silver in the women’s triples at the Gold Coast games in April, said:  “I’d certainly encourage people to get nominating. It’s great to be recognised and anything that helps get young people into sport is good. I know how encouraging it is to see the juniors doing really well in bowling, especially as bowling can often be portrayed as an old person’s sport.”

A five medal haul

Team Scotland’s lawn bowls group’s five medal haul also put them top of the all-time list for Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls medals.

Ronnie, who was part of both the gold medal winning men’s fours and triples in Australia, said: “It’s always an honour when your achievements are recognised by the local community so get nominating.”

Grants for both

Both Ronnie, from Bonnyrigg, and Stacey, from Woodburn, have received Sports Grants from the council in the last year.

Great sporting talent

Midlothian Council leader and cabinet member for sport and leisure, Councillor Derek Milligan said: “The Midlothian Sports Awards are a great way to shine a spotlight on the fantastic sporting talent in the county.  Whether it is a sporting star who is at the top of their game or a volunteering hero working to support the next generation, the awards are always a great chance to recognise those making a difference through sport in Midlothian.

Many thanks

“Big thanks to Ronnie and Stacey for helping us launch this year’s awards.  Their amazing achievements at the Gold Coast Games were great to see – I’m sure they might well get one or two nominations themselves.”
