Boost for Midlothian community groups as councillors back enhanced grants programme
Local community groups across Midlothian are set to benefit from continued and strengthened financial support after councillors approved the future of the council’s large grants programme.
More than half a million pounds annually
At a meeting of full Council this week, elected members agreed to continue the programme from April 2027 with £520,000 per year, alongside inflation-based uplifts over a three-year period. Councillors also backed an amendment to increase this funding to £600,000 annually, with inflation based uplifts over the three-years, subject to additional resources being identified.
Greater financial certainty
The decision provides greater financial certainty for local charities, social enterprises and community organisations delivering vital services in communities across Midlothian.
Supporting communities
The large grants programme supports projects that tackle inequalities, improve health and wellbeing, strengthen local economies and help reduce carbon emissions. A recent independent review highlighted the significant impact of funded projects, which have supported thousands of residents, reduced social isolation and increased confidence among participants, while enabling organisations to grow and sustain their services.
Inflation-linked increases
By committing to a multi-year programme with inflation-linked increases, the council is helping organisations plan ahead, retain staff and volunteers, and continue delivering essential support to those who need it most.
Vital role
Councillor Ellen Scott, Cabinet Member for Communities and Lifelong Learning, said: “The decision is about recognising the vital role our local community groups and charities play in supporting people across Midlothian. Organisations who have benefitted in the past from the large grants include RUTS, Y2K, Lothian Veterans, MYPAS, Midlothian Sure Start, Mayfield and Easthouses Development Trust, Food Facts Friends, Gorebridge Development Trust and Grandparents Parenting Again, to name but a few, are making a real difference every day. Applications for the new round of grant awards will open in the Autumn.

Autumn applications
Work will now progress to develop the next phase of the grants programme, including updated processes and priorities, with a focus on ensuring funding continues to deliver meaningful outcomes for Midlothian communities. Applications for the new round of grant awards will open in the Autumn.
