Listed Buildings are a buildings of special architectural or historical importance which are recognised by Historic Scotland as needing special protection. There are three types of Listed Building protection in Scotland:
- Category A: Buildings of national or international importance, either architectural or historic, or fine little-altered examples of some particular period, style or building type.
- Category B: Buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of some particular period, style or building type which may have been altered.
- Category C: Buildings of local importance, lesser examples of any period, style, or building type, as originally constructed or moderately altered; and simple traditional buildings which group well with others in categories A and B.
Listed Building Consent
Most work involving internal or external alterations to a Listed Building will require Listed Building Consent. The application process for Listed Building Consent is very similar to the planning application process. There is no fee for a Listed Building Consent Application.
If you need to apply for Listed Building Consent you can do so online using the Scottish Government's ePlanning Scotland website. Alternatively you can submit an application by post using the downloadable forms.
Your application will be acknowledged by email or by letter (depending on the method of submission). The application will be registered and made publicly available via the online planning pages of the Council website.
Please note, carrying out of unauthorised works without the appropriate Listed Building Consent is a criminal offence and may result in fines up to £20,000.
