Consultations - The Spaces for People project: Vehicle traffic ban on Crawlees Road, Oatslie Road and Roslin Glen Road
-
Consultation
We launched a one week consultation in October 2020 to find out if proposals to temporarily close three roads to vehicles, following a public engagement exercise earlier in the pandemic, has wider community support. -
Closing date
30/10/2020 -
Summary
Funded by the Scottish Government as part of the Spaces for People Project to encourage cycling, walking and other ways of travelling actively, the proposal is to close Crawlees Road, Mayfield, Oatslie Road, Roslin and Roslin Glen Road for 18 months.
No decisions or actions to implement the proposal have been taken. The project, which has not been considered by councillors, will only go ahead if local people are in favour of it and it is approved by elected members.
The consultation is now closed and we will be sharing the results as soon as possible. -
The proposal was among a number of Spaces for People second bids suggested by local people and community groups and funded by the national charity Sustrans on behalf of the government. The second bids had to be submitted in a relatively short time scale during lockdown in 2020 which meant wider consultation and detailed impact assessments would require to be undertaken following any award of funding.
No action taken yet
The council has not implemented the project outlined below. We were keen to see if this specific project has wider community support or opposition before determining how to proceed or not.
Temporary closures
The project proposed to close all three roads to vehicles by Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (with exceptions for access and maintenance). This would be for a period of 18 months only. This was in line with temporary infrastructure changes, a criteria of the Spaces for People initiative.
More details
The three roads were:
- Crawlees Road, Mayfield (active travel would benefit connecting between Gorebridge, Mayfield, Newtongrange, Dalkeith and NCR1).
- Oatslie Road, Roslin (active travel would benefit between Roslin and Auchendinny and between NCR196 at Dalmore Mill with the Roslin to Shawfair active travel route).
- B7003 Roslin Glen Road (active travel would benefit between Bonnyrigg/Rosewell and Roslin/the Bush and vice versa).
