Ernest ‘Ernie’ Tiernan (27 February 1929 – 23 September 2010)

Biographical history

This collection of photographs of old Loanhead is named after Ernest ‘Ernie’ Tiernan of Loanhead. Ernie Tiernan was born on 27 February 1929. He was married to Kathleen Miller (1933-2011) and they had four children: Stephen, Kathleen, Michael and Christopher.

Ernie and Kathleen moved to Maybank Cottage, Loanhead in 1964. They ran a small drapery and ironmongery business at 46 Clerk Street, Loanhead. They were well known figures in the Loanhead community and regularly attended St Margaret’s RC Church, Loanhead. Both were keen gardeners and their garden at Maybank Cottage was a focal point in Loanhead.

Ernie Tiernan was a keen amateur photographer and had a great interest in the history of Loanhead and the surrounding area. He gathered a large collection of photographs of old Loanhead, and these were often displayed in the windows of local shops during Loanhead Gala Week.   

Ernie Tiernan died on 23 September 2010 and is buried in Loanhead New Cemetery.

Six items relating to Ernie Tiernan; three items about St Margaret’s RC Church, Loanhead which Ernie Tiernan attended regularly; six publications about Loanhead, including three copies of Loanhead Community News; and 266 black and white photographs, all modern copies of originals, showing Loanhead and surrounding area; and events and people in Loanhead. 

Archival history

The collection was donated to Midlothian Local Studies by the Tiernan family in 2011 and 2012.
