Consultation
We have launched a statutory consultation about our proposal to re-designate Mount Esk Nursery School in Bonnyrigg as Hawthornden Primary School nursery class.
If given the go ahead, the nursery will continue to operate from its current building but will come under the leadership of the head teacher at Hawthornden Primary School from August 2026. -
Outcome
Councillors will consider the consultation findings and make a decision at the full Council meeting on 24 February 2026.

The proposals are:
- Mount Esk Nursery School will close from August 2026;
- Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class will be established from August 2026;
- Mount Esk Nursery School will be closed and re-designated to Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class within Hawthornden Primary School;
- The re-designation of Mount Esk Nursery School to Hawthornden Primary School Nursery class will take effect from August 2026;
- The new Hawthornden Primary School Nursery Class will be under the leadership of the Hawthornden Primary School head teacher.

How to get involved
A Public Meeting will take place on:
- Wednesday 19 November 2025 at 6:30pm in Lasswade High School, Assembly Hall.
Virtual Drop-in Sessions will take place on:
- Tuesday 11 November 2025 via Microsoft Teams.
- Thursday 20 November 2025 via Microsoft Teams.
These virtual sessions will take place throughout the day between 2pm - 4pm and 5pm – 7pm. These will be in 20 minute slots.
