Family Learning Centre shortlisted for national award

Hawthorn up for national award

Midlothian Council’s Hawthorn Family Learning Centre is a finalist in a national award scheme recognising local government achievements.

Innovative work

The centre, in Mayfield, has been shortlisted for The MJ Award for Innovation in Children’s Services.

National recognition

The council’s Chief Officer with responsibility for Children’s Services, Joan Tranent said: “It’s wonderful the exceptional work of our Children’s Services team is being recognised.

Expanding its services

“Previously the service focused on providing traditional respite placements for children under two and limited programmes for their parents.

Potential to do more

“However, having recognised the potential to do so much more for our communities and consulted with local people and groups, the team at Hawthorn is now providing key universal and targeted support for Midlothian families.”

Supporting all age groups during pandemic

The chief officer said the during the pandemic Hawthorn was unique, as it was the only hub providing support to children across all age groups – allowing families to attend one setting, reducing the risk of transmission, and creating positive family experiences during unprecedented times.

An inclusive environment

Hawthorn provided an inclusive environment for Midlothian’s most vulnerable children; including care experienced children, those on the child protection register and children with additional support needs.

A flexible approach

Staff showed resilience and commitment to be flexible in the support provided. The chief officer added families were supported with everything from respite care to educational and recreational activities and support with financial and food poverty.

Extended hours

Hawthorn extended its hours introducing a supper club helping feed families and giving siblings the chance to learn to make healthy meals, shared in the setting and at home.

Serving local people

With lockdown now lifted, Hawthorn continues to serve the wider community with changes to embed a more flexible service including now being able to provide long term care and support, including early year’s placements from birth to five.

Good luck Hawthorn

The winners of the MJ Awards will be announced at a special ceremony in London in September.
