Celebrating sporting success at Lasswade High

Last week's Sports Personality of the Year at Lasswade High School was a huge success.

Joint effort

PE staff member Sarah McKay and Active School’s co-ordinator Katie McPherson organised the celebration with pupils from the school’s sport council offering support and the parent council supplying teas and coffees.

Radio host

Mark Martin, Edge Edinburgh radio station presenter, hosted the ceremony before a packed hall of staff, pupils, parents and VIPs.

Special guests

Gary Locke, former pupil who played for Hearts and successful coach, came along on the night as did basketball player Simon Flockhart who has captained Scotland. Meanwhile Michael Jones, another former pupil, and Luke Crosbie, Edinburgh Rugby Club professional players, were also among the VIP guests.

The awards

There were awards for Player of the Year in football, rugby, netball, basketball, along with many other sports. Elite Performer awards were given out to pupils who were achieving success within their sport outwith the school. A Team of the Year was awarded the Senior Girls’ Football team who are on track to secure the Scottish Schools Cup for the third year running.

Outstanding Contribution

Eilidh Armstrong, a member of the Active Schools Leadership Academy, was crowned Pupil Volunteer of the Year while Active Schools Co-ordinator Judith Clyne-Parker won the Outstanding Contribution Award.

More than 1600 votes

Over 1600 pupils voted for the finalists of the main award, Sports Personality of the Year. The four finalists, Cameron Efole (basketball), Lucy Stevenson (football), Cameron Sanders (football) and Harry Jackaman (rugby) took to the stage on the evening to perform challenges against their teachers before the main award was announced. Harry Jackaman took home the prestigious award for his achievements in rugby, breaking into the Scotland youth squads.

Well done everyone

A huge thank you much go to Miss Mckay and the PE staff, Active Schools, special guests, Upbeat Dance who entertained the crowd, the lighting and sound team, Lasswade Parent council and the Lasswade Sports Council. The night would not have been such a success without the support from everyone!
