Midlothian Council Makes Progress on Equality Goals

Councillors welcomed two reports highlighting progress made on embedding equality across its services over the last two years and its plans to build on that success from now until 2029.

Fairness, opportunity and respect

At today’s full Council meeting, councillors heard more about ongoing and future initiatives to ensure fairness, opportunity, and respect for all.

Eliminating discrimination

This work supports legislation requiring public bodies to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations between different groups.

Key achievements

Key achievements include equality training, improvements in data monitoring, and a more inclusive approach to service design through the Integrated Impact Assessment process. This now also includes children’s rights, following the introduction of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024.

Inclusive education

In schools, Midlothian is promoting inclusive education through its Equipped for Learning digital programme and participation in the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools initiative. Across the wider community, events such as Equal Midlothian Week, the Midlothian Mela, and Interfaith Week highlight the area’s commitment to celebrating diversity and building community cohesion.

Proud of our work

“We are proud of the work we’ve done and the actions we plan to take to make equality part of everything we do,” said Cabinet Member with responsibility for Equalities, Councillor Connor McManus.

Included and heard

“From planning services to supporting our workforce and engaging communities, we are determined to ensure that everyone in Midlothian feels included, heard, and respected.”

Our plans

Future outcomes and actions are outlined in the Equality Outcomes for 2025-2029 report. Developed in partnership with local authorities across the Lothians, and shaped by key data and 221 responses to a public consultation, the outcomes aim to tackle inequality in education, work, housing, accessibility, and justice.

Council-wide priorities

Priorities include raising attainment for disadvantaged pupils, supporting inclusive workplaces, reducing homelessness, and improving access to information and services. Staff training on hate crime and gender-based violence is also a focus.
