Work to Repair and Improve Midlothian Council Headquarters Set to Begin

Mid House work gets underway

With the main contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey now appointed, work will get underway to repair and enhance Midlothian Council’s headquarters in Dalkeith, delivering improved facilities and a better customer experience for our communities.

One stop shop

The project will see the exterior of the building restored and the ground floor transformed into a modern ‘one stop shop’ for council services including housing, revenues and benefits advice alongside a new Dalkeith Library and Arts Centre, all within an attractive, accessible, and energy-efficient environment.

Cost-efficient

Councillor Parry said: “This is a much-needed, cost-efficient project that will improve our service to our residents.

New library and arts centre

“Local people will benefit from a new ‘one stop shop’ where they can access housing, revenues and benefits advice in a comfortable, modern setting, which will also incorporates the new Dalkeith Library and Arts Centre.”

18 months of work

The refurbishment is expected to take around 18 months to complete. It will largely be funded through savings achieved by selling or repurposing other buildings, including Fairfield House and Dalkeith Library, alongside efficiency gains from energy improvements and the extended lifespan of the headquarters.

Important refurbishment

Barry Bryce, Operations Director at McLaughlin & Harvey was joined onsite with Midlothian Council’s Head of Development Fiona Clandillon and Programme Manager Andrew Souter, pictured. He commented: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with SCAPE Scotland and Midlothian Council to deliver this important refurbishment of their headquarters. Our team is committed to ensuring the project not only preserves the building’s character but also creates a modern, energy efficient space that will serve the community of Midlothian for years to come.”

During the works, Midlothian House reception will be closed from Monday 25 August.
