Council Approves new Play Strategy to help children thrive
Midlothian Council today (9 September) officially approved the Midlothian Play Strategy & Action Plan 2025–2028 - a bold and inclusive framework designed to ensure every child in Midlothian has the opportunity to play every day.
Commissioned
The strategy has been commissioned by the GIRFEC (Getting It Right for Every Child) Board as part of its commitment to the UNCRC Children’s Rights priority.
Key areas
It focuses on three key areas:
- Play at home
- Play in the community
- Play in childcare and educational settings
Aims
The Strategy aims to reduce inequalities and promote inclusive play across all communities.
Collaboration
The strategy was developed collaboratively by the Children and Young People’s Rights GIRFEC Subgroup, with representation from Midlothian Council, NHS Lothian, and Third Sector organisations. It aligns with the Scottish Government’s Play: Vision Statement and Action Plan 2025–2030.
Evidence-based plan
Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Councillor Ellen Scott said:
“Play is such an important part of growing up. It helps children learn, connect, and thrive in so many ways. This strategy takes into account the different needs of children and young people across Midlothian, and lays out a practical, evidence-based plan to make sure they have access to safe, inclusive, and fun places to play. We are taking a big step forward in supporting children’s rights and helping them grow up healthy and happy.”
Delivery
The plan will be delivered through coordinated efforts across council services and community planning partners. A dedicated Steering Group will oversee implementation.
Strategic framework
While the strategy is designed to be flexible in response to financial constraints, it will serve as a strategic framework to guide investment and attract external funding.
