Writing Competition Winners Announced

Congratulations to Riley Ward (14, Saltersgate School) – winner of the council's Book Week Scotland writing competition with his heartfelt piece “My School”.

Friendship

This competition was held as part of Book Week Scotland 2025. It invited secondary pupils to unleash their inner author by writing a short poem or rap on the theme of Friendship.

Happy memories

Riley’s poem beautifully captured the joy of learning and the happy memories made in school, earning praise for creativity and presentation.

Runner up

Well done also to talented runner-up, Madeleine Duncker (11, Penicuik High School), who wowed the judges with “Slimy Friendship” – a simple yet powerful poem full of vivid imagery.

Judging

Entries were judged on structure, creativity, and imagination by a panel including young people and renowned poet Matt Kelly from the council’s Recycling Team. Matt was very impressed by the diversity of young people’s hopes expressed in the poetry including dreams of finding a friend who’s always there for you.

Award Ceremony

Winners of the writing competition were announced last night at the Midlothian Young People Awards in Rosslyn Chapel.

Creativity

Cllr Ellen Scott, Cabinet member with responsibility for schools and young people said:

“We were thrilled to see so many fantastic entries in this year’s writing competition. Riley and Madeleine should be incredibly proud of their achievement in becoming winner and runner-up among such strong submissions. Their creativity and interpretation of the theme of friendship truly stood out!"

Book

All entries submitted for the competition will now be published in a digital book to be made available on the Midlothian Libraries web pages.
