Consultation on Gaelic Language Plan Launched
We have launched a public consultation on our draft Gaelic Language Plan for 2026 - 31, building on the success of the previous plan (2021–26).
Preserving Gaelic
The new plan sets out the steps the council will take over the next five years to preserve and promote Gaelic across Midlothian.
Safeguarding the future of Gaelic
It has been prepared in line with the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act and the National Gaelic Language Plan 2023–28, supporting the Scottish Government’s vision to safeguard the future of Gaelic by raising its profile and creating more opportunities for communities to use the language.
Commitments
The draft plan includes actions and commitments around identity and status, as well as Gaelic language usage and acquisition.
Access survey
The plan is available in both English and Gaelic on the council’s consultation hub Citizen Space:

Midlothian Council leader, Cllr Kelly Parry said: “We’re encouraging everyone in Midlothian to take part in this consultation, whether you speak Gaelic or not. Your views matter. This is a public conversation about how we protect and promote the Gaelic language over the next five years, and every perspective will help shape a plan that reflects and supports our whole community.”
Deadline
The consultation runs until 22 January 2026.
