Midlothian Council approves update on 20mph zones monitoring

Midlothian Council’s Cabinet has today (Tues) approved an update on the ongoing monitoring of 20mph zones across the county, following the programme’s initial approval in 2023.

Next steps

The report outlined progress to date and set out next steps to ensure the 20mph programme continues to support road safety, active travel and community wellbeing.

Gathering data

Cabinet noted the completion of the rollout of 20mph zones across Midlothian and the continuing monitoring now under way. This work includes data gathered by council officers, permanent speed‑survey stations, Police Scotland, and community-led reporting.

Reviewing some roads

As part of the update, Cabinet agreed:

  • To acknowledge the delivery of 20mph zones across Midlothian since their approval in 2023.
  • To continue monitoring speeds using council, police and community data.
  • To review areas where compliance is poor and consider amendments where required, including improved signage or speed‑control measures in line with Transport Scotland guidance.
  • To consider reverting a small number of roads to previous speed limits where evidence shows this would be appropriate.
  • To begin a full review of speed limits on arterial link routes.

Some roads may return to 30mph

These changes may result in a small number of roads returning to 30mph, while others may receive additional control measures where suitable. Officers have already begun the monitoring work and will bring forward recommended changes during the 2026/27 financial year.

Getting it right for our community

Councillor Colin Cassidy, Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This update shows the council’s commitment to getting our 20mph programme right for every community. The monitoring now underway will ensure that where the new limits are working well, we continue to support them, and where adjustments are needed, we make them based on clear evidence. Our priority is the safety of road users, pedestrians and residents across Midlothian.”
