Midlothian Council will not recognise 15 June 2026 as an extra public holiday

Midlothian Council has decided not to recognise Monday 15 June 2026 as a local public holiday.

The date has been designated as a national bank holiday by the Scottish Government to mark Scotland’s participation in the men’s FIFA World Cup Finals.

However, after considering the proposal today, councillors agreed (no vote) against introducing an extra local public holiday.

Introducing the holiday would have created additional financial pressures of around £130,000, which would need to be met within the already challenging 2026/27 budget.

Councillor Kelly Parry, Leader of Midlothian Council, said:

“Due to the pressures on our already challenging budget, Midlothian Council will not be recognising the national bank holiday.

“Introducing an extra public holiday would cost Midlothian Council around £130,000. That’s a significant amount – almost half of what we spend each year helping residents who are struggling with the cost of living crisis. In real terms, it’s similar to adding almost a quarter‑percent rise in Council Tax.

“Given the financial pressures the council and households are facing, we do not believe this would have been the right priority for Midlothian at this time.

“However, we remain committed to helping our communities enjoy Scotland’s World Cup appearance and have kicked off on our preparations for the competition.

“Council officials are already on the front foot by working with local businesses, schools and community groups to make sure there are opportunities for people to get involved and celebrate. Our focus now is on making the most of these opportunities within existing budgets.”
