Young Stars Shine at Newbattle Cluster Cheer Competition

Primary pupils from across the Newbattle Associated School Group (ASG) took centre stage recently as Newbattle High School hosted its first-ever Cluster Cheer Competition – a fun-filled day celebrating teamwork, confidence and community spirit.

Cheered on

More than 130 pupils from P5 to P7 performed cheer routines in front of an audience of almost 300 parents, carers, families, high school pupils and staff. For many of the children, this was their first time trying cheerleading, making their confident performances even more impressive.

Inspiring young leaders

In the weeks leading up to the event, senior cheer captains from Newbattle High School (S3–S6) volunteered their time to run after-school cheer clubs in local primary schools. Supported by Active Schools, these young leaders planned sessions, taught new skills and created the routines performed on the day.

Great performances

Their enthusiasm and encouragement helped primary pupils grow in confidence, learn new movements and work together as a team. The high standard of the performances reflected the effort put in by both the primary pupils and their high school mentors.

Positive role models

Jamie Dougal, Principal Teacher at Easthouses Primary School, said the project had been hugely popular: “This was a new sport for many pupils and gave them the chance to perform and learn from positive role models. The fact that pupils are already asking if they can do it again shows how much they enjoyed it.”

Pilot programme

The idea for the programme came from strong interest in cheerleading among primary pupils who had not previously had the chance to take part. Active Schools coordinators Carolyn Cameron and Danny Simpson, working with Amy Duvall, PE and dance teacher at Newbattle High School, developed a pilot programme that led to the cluster competition.

New skills

In total, over 150 primary pupils were introduced to cheerleading through this initiative, while high school pupils gained valuable leadership and coaching experience.

Very proud

Amy Duvall, PE and Dance teacher at Newbattle High School said: “This project has created exciting opportunities for younger pupils and meaningful leadership roles for our high school students. We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved and already looking forward to next year.”

The competition highlighted the strength of the Newbattle school community, supporting a positive transition from primary to secondary school and opening the door to a bright future in sport, leadership and confidence for many young people across Midlothian.
