Community champions awarded British Empire Medals
Lousie Gough and James Wilson, two Midlothian community leaders, have been invested with the British Empire Medal by Sarah Barron, Lord-Lieutenant for Midlothian.
New Year Honours list
They were both awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2026 New Year Honours list for their exceptional services to local charities, sports, and youth development.
Investiture
The investiture took place at a special ceremony held in Rosslyn Chapel which was also attended by Midlothian Provost, Debbie McCall.
Louise - transforming lives
Lousie Gough was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to foster care. Her innovative and compassionate work has transformed the lives of countless young people and families demonstrating her own resilience and selflessness. For over 28 years she has been a stalwart foster carer, fostering 63 children. Her founding role in the development of Bright Sparks, a charity for children with disabilities, has been transformative for children with additional support needs.
James - an ambassador for wellbeing
James Wilson was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to youth development, sport and to community empowerment. His connection with Bonnyrigg Rose Community Football Club began 18 years ago when he first offered his time as a coach to support young people. Now chair of the club, his dedicated service and exemplary leadership reflect the highest standards. Beyond football, he has demonstrated himself as a compassionate ambassador for wider community wellbeing
Exceptional service
Lord-Lieutenant Sarah Barron said: "As Lord-Lieutenant for Midlothian and on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III, it was both an honour and a privilege for me to invest two British Empire Medals, which were granted in the New Year Honours List 2026, to Louise Marie Gough and James John Wilson. The British Empire Medal is awarded to those who have given exceptional service to their community or have demonstrated a dedicated commitment to charitable causes."

Sarah added: "Both Louise and James embody the very best of the national honours system, going above and beyond, helping others and making a huge difference in their own communities. It is wonderful to see them gain this national recognition and I warmly congratulate them both."
