Midlothian Council clarifies and reaffirms its support for the World Cup

Midlothian Council is proud to join communities across the country in supporting Scotland’s participation in the FIFA Men’s World Cup.

Bringing communities together

As part of Scotland’s World Cup journey, we recognise the excitement and sense of national pride that this historic occasion brings. Across Midlothian, our schools, leisure facilities, community groups and residents are coming together to celebrate the positive impact that sport can have in inspiring participation, promoting wellbeing and bringing communities together.

Professional and inclusive workspaces

The council’s recent reminder of guidance to employees regarding workplace dress and displays was intended solely to ensure that council workplaces remain professional, inclusive and welcoming environments for all colleagues and visitors. It was not intended to discourage support for Scotland or diminish the significance of the national team’s achievement in reaching the World Cup.

Council embraces World Cup themed celebrations

On the contrary, Midlothian Council has actively embraced the tournament through a range of World Cup-themed activities and initiatives. Our schools have been delivering World Cup projects and learning opportunities, our catering teams have incorporated themed menus and decorations, and our leisure centres have been celebrating the tournament through activities and displays that encourage participation in sport.

Showcasing teamwork and determination

This spirit embraces the council’s World Cup motion of December 2025, promoting wider commitment to physical activity and sporting engagement through initiatives, such as the Summer of Sport, which aims to inspire residents to get involved in sport, support local clubs and celebrate major sporting events. Scotland’s participation on the world stage provides a fantastic opportunity to encourage greater involvement in sport and to showcase the values of teamwork, determination and community spirit.

Cheering the team on

Council Leader Councillor Kelly Parry says: I will be cheering on Scotland’s Men's Team this Friday, and it has been fantastic to see the visual display of Scotland flags flying across Midlothian in support of our national team's achievements."
