Midlothian tenancy fraud investigations recover 15 social housing properties
A collaboration between Midlothian Council’s corporate fraud team and housing officers helped to recover 15 council homes during the last financial year.
Investigations
A total of 89 allegations of potential tenancy fraud were investigated in 2025/26, resulting in the return of 15 properties to the council’s housing stock. These were subsequently made available to those in genuine need of social housing.
Savings
For each of the properties identified, the calculation, according to Audit Scotland guidance, is £78,300 per property recovered - resulting in a value of £1,174,500. According to the Counter Fraud annual report to the council’s Audit Committee, total recoveries of £ £1,181,206 were identified during 2025/26 as a result of counter fraud activity.
National Fraud Initiative
Outcomes of the council’s participation in the National Fraud Initiative for 2024/25 resulted in a total saving of £801,176.
