Falls Prevention Community Drop-In heads to Penicuik

Falls Prevention Event

The Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership's popular free Falls Prevention Community Drop-In is heading to Penicuik.

Put the date in your diary

Following two highly successful events in Lasswade, the next drop-in will take place at Ladywood Leisure Centre, 14A Yarrow Court, Penicuik, EH26 8HD, on Thursday 29 October from 10am to 2pm.

Thumbs up from attendees

Midlothian Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Councillor Connor McManus, who also chairs the governing body of the Health and Social Care Partnership, said: "The previous two events attracted more than 200 people each and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. People told us they loved the event but would like to see it come to Penicuik, so we're delighted to bring it to Ladywood.

Room full of healthcare professionals

"Where else can you speak to more than 20 healthcare professionals in one place, without needing an appointment?"

Lots of expertise

A wide range of local health teams and organisations will attend, including physiotherapists, dietitians, optometrists, pharmacists, occupational therapists and the Ageing Well team. Visitors can also access information on bone health, dementia support, continence care, green health activities, home adaptations and more.

Helping you stay independent

In total, 441 people attended the previous events in September 2025 and April 2026 to receive expert advice, practical demonstrations and information on staying healthy and independent.

For over 50s

The event is organised by Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner Linda Linton and is open to everyone aged 50 and over, as well as their families.

Welcoming old and new faces

Linda said: "At our last event, 100 people signed up to take part in research looking at the longer-term impact of community events like these. We're looking forward to catching up with them and welcoming lots of new faces in Penicuik."

Homemade cake

Visitors will be able to enjoy tea, coffee and homemade cake while finding out how simple changes can help reduce the risk of falls. Friendly professionals will be on hand to offer advice on strength and balance exercises, healthy eating, safe footwear and regular health checks.

Great tips and advice

Practical demonstrations will include how to get up safely after a fall, exercising at home and advice from mobility specialists.

Part of our transformation programme

The event is part of the health and social care partnership’s transformation work to help people live longer and healthier lives.

Fall risk

Linda added: "The risk of falling increases from around age 50 and by age 65 around one in three people will have experienced a fall. Falls can affect confidence, independence and wellbeing, but there is a lot people can do to reduce their risk. This event is a great opportunity to learn more, get practical advice and have fun in a relaxed and welcoming environment."
