A fun, friendly, & informative event for anyone over 50, their friends & family. Whether you're thinking ahead or already looking for support, this day is packed with expert advice & local resources.

Did you know your risk of falling starts to rise from age 50? But the good news is — there is a lot you can do to improve your strength and balance to stay steadier on your feet and confident in your day-to-day life.
Come along to enjoy teas/coffees, cake and:
- Learn how simple strength and balance exercises can help prevent falls
- Discover how factors like hearing, vision, diet, blood pressure, and even footwear play a role in staying safe
- Chat with local health professionals and support organisations
- Get tips on equipment, home adaptations, and more to support your independence and help you live well for longer
- Ask questions and find out what’s available for YOU in Midlothian
We have lots of expert advice:
Health professional and third sector groups/organisations | How they can help prevent falls |
Ageing Well team | The team will be offering blood pressure tests, Active Ageing Functional Testing such as checking your baseline strength and flexibility and advising on how to improve on those. |
Alzheimer Scotland/ dementia team | Information on Alzheimers and resources will available for you, your family and carers. |
Bone health/ osteoporosis team | Advanced physiotherapy practitioners and the Lydia Osteoporosis Project from Queen Margaret University with help and advice on improving bone health and reducing risk of osteoporosis. |
Continence physiotherapy specialist | Get specialist help and advice on bladder control and staying active. |
Dietitian | Hear more on how improving your diet can help bone health, and managing your weight can reduce falls. |
Equipment advice team | Come along to have a chat with physiotherapists and try out Fast Aid Medical & Mobility equipment such as walking aids. have provided equipment for demonstration. |
Exercise specialist | The specialist will show you how to get up off the floor after a fall and give you tips on exercises to do at home. |
Green health team | Connecting with the outdoors can have a positive effect on your physical and mental health. Green health can provide information on what is local to you. |
Health Inclusion Team | Midlothian Health Inclusion Team meets with vulnerable adults in the community to discuss any health worries and look to improve long term health outcomes/ conditions. It works with people from a variety of backgrounds including people who have experienced homelessness, substance use, carers (monthly health clinic at VOCAL) and other marginalised groups. |
Midlothian Sport & Wellbeing Leisure Service | Have a chat and hear more about their falls prevention programme “Step into Balance” and a range of classes and facilities which can be accessed throughout Midlothian Active Choices (MAC). |
Occupational therapist | Ensuring your home is safe can help avoid trips and falls, and specialist equipment and advice from occupational therapy can help reduce the risk further. |
Optometrist/ vision specialists | Optometry plays a crucial role in falls prevention, particularly for older adults, by addressing vision-related risk factors. |
Osteoarthritis specialists | Pain from joints can increase risk of falls. Advanced physiotherapy practitioners will be on hand to give advice on osteoarthritis and how to manage symptoms. |
Pharmacist | Advice on how best to take medications safely can reduce risk of falls. Learn more about the pharmacy service in Midlothian. |
Physiotherapists |
The physiotherapists have lots of advice on easy exercises you can do at home and they’ll also be able to chat about any aches and pains you are having. Meanwhile, the community physiotherapist will be able to discuss how to get help at home and services to contact should a fall happen when you are at home. |
Podiatrist | Advice on footwear and looking after feet can reduce risk of falls. |
Red Cross | Red Cross has a monthly calendar of activities across Midlothian to help keep you fit, health and in good company. The team can also change the ferrules (tips) on most walking sticks to help keep you safe and make assessments on how your home could be adapted to help prevent falls. |
RNID - hearing | Hearing can affect balance and the RNID can help with hearing tests to reduce risk of falls. |
Screening – breast, bowel and AAA | The team will be on hand to explain why it is important to attend breast and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening appointments and to complete your at-home bowel screening test. |
VOCAL – carer support | VOCAL supports unpaid carers with information and advice on practical issues, emotional and social support, and the opportunity to take a break |
How to get to the Lasswade Centre
- By car: Fee car park approximately 50 metres from the main entrance. Disabled spaces and drop off area at the main entrance.
- By bus: Lothian buses 46 and 31. The nearest bus stop is on Polton Street at Hopefield Place or Hazel Drive. This is approximately a 5-minute walk to the Lasswade Centre.
Once inside
There will be no stairs to negotiate on the day, but there will be some walking between rooms to access all the services. People will be on hand to direct and help you get between rooms. There will be a wheelchair available and people to help assist as needed. Tea/coffee and cake will be provided and a chance to sit down, have a blether and relax.
