Festive reminder as 20mph compliance continues to rise across Midlothian
New data shows increasing numbers of drivers in Midlothian are complying with the new 20mph speed limits - just in time for the busy festive season.
Communities adapting
Recent monitoring reveals significant improvements as communities adapt to the slower speeds. In Lasswade, compliance has increased by 18% between September and November, while Loanhead’s Mayshade Road has seen a 9% rise over the same period. Near Dalkeith High School, 82% of drivers are already travelling within the limit.
Positive changes
Cabinet Member for Roads, Councillor Dianne Alexander, praised residents for embracing safer speeds and urged everyone to continue to do so. “These figures show people across Midlothian are making positive, lasting changes. With darker nights, busier streets and more people out and about over Christmas, I’m asking drivers to continue choosing safety—slowing down really does save lives.”
Speed matters
Transport Scotland figures confirm speed matters, Cllr Alexander added. A person hit at 30mph is seven times more likely to die than if struck at 20mph. National data shows that 30mph roads account for the majority of pedestrian (69%) and pedal cyclist (54%) casualties, as well as significant proportions of motorcyclist (33%) and car occupant (30%) injuries.
Safer streets
The move to 20mph limits across all appropriate built‑up areas in Scotland aims to make streets safer, healthier and more welcoming. Slower speeds reduce the risk and severity of collisions and help create calmer spaces where more people feel confident walking, wheeling or cycling—cutting congestion and supporting Scotland’s journey to net zero.
Driving home for Christmas
Cllr Alexander said: “This Christmas, we’re asking everyone behind the wheel to give the gift of safer streets. By keeping to 20mph, drivers can help ensure all residents get home safely this festive season.”
