Your early learning and childcare options

Childcare you can pay for

If you need more childcare than the funded hours for 2, 3 and 4 year olds, or you have children of other ages, there are a few options you can pay for.

Types of childcare

Private/community day nurseries

Day nurseries generally care for children from 3 months (sometimes 6 weeks) to school-age. They offer care from around 7:30 to 18:00 for most of the year. Most offer a choice of morning, afternoon or full day sessions. Some nurseries provide out of school childcare for school-age children.

Costs vary depending on the child’s age (babies generally cost more because of the higher staff:child ratio). They will offer childcare around your funded early learning and childcare hours if required.

Out of school care

Out of school clubs include breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday care. They are for children aged 4-14, to play, learn and have fun.

Clubs are usually based in or near schools. Some are managed by a voluntary committee of parents, and some are privately managed.

The Workforce and Childcare Development Officer supports clubs in Midlothian. Contact:

Childminders

Childminders provide care, education and play for children under five years, and school-aged children in their own home. All childminders are registered with The Care Inspectorate.

They are self-employed, and can often give flexible service all year.

For more information about choosing a childminder, visit the Scottish Childminding Association website.

Playgroups

Playgroups are aimed at children aged 2-5 years. Most playgroups are locally based and locally managed.

A good quality playgroup will provide a safe, well-planned environment, which encourages children to learn through a broad play-based curriculum.

Sessions are usually in the mornings and last 2 to 3 hours, although some playgroups run for longer.

Local Authority childcare

Lasswade High School Childcare Service (Nursery) provides childcare for children 3 months to 5 years, from 7:45am to 5:30pm Monday to Thursday and 7.45am to 1pm on a Friday in school term time.

A full day is £45 and a half day is £22.50.

Each child is cared for in a stimulating environment in which they can learn and develop through play.

The nursery is registered with the Care Inspectorate to ensure a high quality service. Contact the nursery on 0131 271 4540 or email c.mitchell3@midlothian.education
