Waste service updates

Update on Monday 16 February

We are returning today to empty grey bins missed on Friday because of the snow and blue bins are being emptied as normal. However, we are not able to empty some food waste and glass bins. If we miss them today please take them back in and put them out again on your next scheduled collection day.

Update on Friday 13 February

We’ve been unable to collect food waste today on several routes due to snow. We anticipate there being further weather disruption and some other areas may not be completed. If we do miss your food waste bin today, please leave it out on your next scheduled collection day. Many thanks again for your patience.

We’ve been unable to access some streets in Gorebridge today due to heavy snow. If you’ve been missed, please present your bin for collection for Monday morning, when we’ll return to finish.

The sign-up deadline for garden waste has also now passed for first collections starting in March. You can still sign up, but your sticker may not arrive in time for the first collection.

Update on Thursday 12 February

We have returned to collect food waste bins missed on Tuesday but, because of a vehicle breakdown, we have not been able to collect some food bins in Loanhead and Dalkeith. If we miss your food waste bin today, please leave it out on your next scheduled collection day. We are coming back tomorrow (Friday) for a few grey bins missed in Mayfield and Gowkshill so please leave them out. Many thanks for your patience.

Update on Wednesday 11 February

We are not able to collect food bins today in some areas of Bonnyrigg, Mayfield and Newtongrange today. Please put the food bins back out on your next scheduled collection day. Apologies for the inconvenience. We have also missed some grey bins in Dalkeith because of a vehicle breakdown. Please leave your grey bin out and we will empty it tomorrow.

Changes to your kerbside recycling collection services from March 2026

From March 2026 we are changing how we collect your recycling:

  1. You will have a NEW green bin for paper, card and cardboard
  2. Your blue bin will only be for plastic bottles, tubs and trays, steel and aluminium cans, and cartons.
  3. There may be a change to the day we collect your blue, green and grey bins. These will be emptied on a three-weekly cycle.

Delivery of your new Green bin

  • Green bins will be delivered between mid-January and the end of February 2026.
  • Green bins will be delivered to the boundary of residential properties. In the case of an assisted pullout service, bins will be delivered directly to where they are stored.
  • You will receive a letter notifying you of the change of service. If your collection day changes, we will let you know.
  • For some properties, alternative shared recycling facilities will be provided, and you will be contacted separately regarding these.
  • Existing communal recycling bins will be converted to collect either paper and card or plastics, cans and cartons.
