School transport for mainstream schools

Code of Conduct

School transport is there to help pupils get to school safely. Pupils must show consideration for others. Parents, guardians and carers must ensure their child maintains an acceptable standard of conduct while travelling.

If poor behaviour disrupts travel we will take action to protect pupils. The transport provider may also take action in cases of criminal damage or violence towards staff. Such incidents may be reported directly to the police.

Guidelines for pupils

  • Act responsibly at all times – behave sensibly and follow the rules.
  • Respect the driver - on't swear or shout at them, don't distract them and follow their instructions immediately.
  • Wear a seatbelt if there is one.
  • Be polite and considerate and help younger pupils if needed. Bullying is not tolerated – repeated or serious bullying may result in suspension from transport.
  • Keep gangways or emergency exits clear.
  • Show your bus pass to the driver. No pass = no travel.
  • Wait safely at the bus stop – stand away from the road and do not play near traffic.
  • Board calmly – wait until the bus stops, line up sensibly, never cross immediately in front of or behind the bus.
  • Only get on your allocated bus.
  • Do not move around on the bus - only move when the bus has stopped.
  • Do not eat or drink on the bus.
  • Do not leave litter on the bus.
  • Do not damage the bus.

Responsibilities of parents, guardians and carers

  • Supervise younger children – accompany them to the bus stop and wait until the bus arrives, meet them from the bus when they return from school. You are responsible for your child’s journey to and from the designated pickup/drop off point. You must make sure your child is safe if transport fails to arrive for any reason.
  • Make sure your child knows the safest way to the bus and crossing points.
  • Make sure your child only uses their allocated bus to avoid overcrowding and ensure safety records are accurate.
  • Encourage good behaviour – remind your child to stay seated, wear seatbelts, act safely, and treat the driver and other passengers with respect. Reinforce that bullying is not tolerated and encourage your child to speak up if they experience or witness it.
  • Report lost/stolen/damaged passes/tickets. Request a replacement travel pass from the school. This costs £10.  A temporary pass can be issued by the school for High School pupils
  • Notify changes – tell the School Transport Team if your child no longer needs transport or if your circumstances change.
  • Be aware of consequences – serious or repeated misbehaviour may lead to suspension of free or concessionary travel.
