Tell us your views on the future of libraries and customer services

Would you like to change library opening hours?

Part of a bid to transform services and help meet a savings target for next year of £230,000, the consultation includes options for changing library opening hours, redesigning services at Roslin Library, making greater use of self service technology, and providing more customer service hubs like the one at Mayfield Library.

The survey runs until Monday 14 November

Between now and Monday 14 November, customers are being asked which of these ‘choices for change’ they would support.  A further round of consultations will be held early in 2017, before any final proposals are agreed.

A consultation paper has been produced with an options survey which residents can complete.

Reducing costs and improving services is a huge challenge

“The increasing need to improve services and reduce costs is a huge challenge for us,” explained Midlothian Council Leader, Councillor Catherine Johnstone.  “The ways in which our customers want to interact with us is changing, which means transforming the way we work to better meet their needs. At the same time, government funding cuts mean that we need to continue to make savings.

We want to make our services fit for the future

“We’ve already done a lot to transform libraries and customer services and the options set out in this latest consultation are aimed at making sure our services are fit for the future, added councillor Johnstone.  “I would encourage all our customers to get involved, to complete the survey questionnaire and to give us their comments and ideas.  We will consult again in early 2017 on any specific proposals which have been developed based on the feedback which has been received during this first phase of consultation.  This really is your chance to shape the future.”

The libraries consultation part of a wider review

The libraries and customer services consultation is part of the wider ‘Shaping our Future’ consultation launched by the council to give residents the opportunity to have their say on the future of local services.  A further phase of the consultation, seeking public opinion on ‘choices for change’ covering a wide range of other council services was launched earlier this month.
