A community garden project in Midlothian has been Commended in the Scottish Government’s ‘2012 Scottish Community Payback Unpaid Work Awards’.
The successful project is a partnership between Midlothian Council's criminal justice team and Newbattle Abbey College. As part of offenders' community payback they have created a community garden and worked on the Italian garden at Newbattle Abbey College.
The community garden project was 'Commended' in the award's partnership category. Not only has the local community benefitted from a community garden, offenders have also developed their rural skills which increases their chance of finding future employment and reduces the risk of reoffending.
