Phased increase in burial charges
Council agrees rises
At a full council meeting on Tuesday, councillors approved the increase which will see charges rise by 14% annually over the three year period.
A spokesman said: “We realise this is a very sensitive issue and we do want to stress that some burials will remain exempt from charges. However, the majority of burials and purchase of lairs will go up by 14%.
“This rise equates to an extra £68 for an adult burial, which currently costs £488. In East Lothian, the same charge is currently £709. We still feel, therefore, our charges are low compared with some other local authorities.”
A package of measures to save money
The move, which is estimated to increase income to the council by £141,000 over three years, is among a package of measures to address a budget gap in excess of £7 million.
