Smouldering colliery waste closes woodland park

An area of smouldering colliery waste at the Kirkhill Tip within Gore Glen Woodland Park, near Gorebridge, has led to the partial closure of the park.

The eastern side of the woodland park and the main car park will be closed until further notice, along with the bridge over the railway line, to remove any risk of people gaining access to the former coal bing. There is a risk to human health and of the ground collapsing in adjacent areas.

In the short term, the council is securing the site with fencing and will carry out daily security checks.

Midlothian Council is liaising with the Coal Authority for advice both on public safety and on the longer term remediation of the site.
